In 1841, the family was introduced to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Thomas Kington baptized Joseph, Mary, and Joseph George in January, among the earliest church members in Bristol.

When Joseph died the children's ages were: Joseph George, 17; Henry William, 15; Mary Ann, 11; Frederick Charles, 9; Hyrum John, 5; and Alfred Edward, 2. Joseph was buried at St. Phillip & St. Jacob Church.

Mary remained in Bristol for a few years, working as a dressmaker. Joseph George and Henry were apprenticed, and helped Mary support the family.

In 1854, the family (except Joseph George) sailed from Liverpool to New Orleans, bound for Utah. They traveled up the Mississippi River and joined a pioneer company in Kansas City. Mary was sick during the journey and died along the trail, leaving behind orphaned children Mary Ann, 16; Frederich Charles, 14; Hyrum John, 10; and Alfred Edward, 7.

Henry led the family the rest of the way to Utah, and took care of the younger children. Alfred was living with him in Ogden in 1860.
