Parents' Childhood
Caleb Wesley Smith was born in 1890 to John and Ida Smith in Walla Walla County, Washington.
Della Price Smitchger was born in 1901 to Lawrence and Tillie Smitchger in Ada County, Idaho.
Caleb and Della Smith
Caleb enlisted in the Navy and served for 6 years; at the 1910 census, he was aboard the USS Nebraska (BB-14). In 1917, he registered for the World War I Draft in Benton County, Washington, listing his current profession as a farm hand. In early 1920 he was living with his parents in Portland, Oregon.
Caleb and Della met while he worked on the Smitchger family's farm. The were married in 1920 and had three children before divorcing a few years later.

James Wesley was given his father's middle name, and may also have been named after Caleb's brother, James Willes, who had died 5 years earlier.
Caleb's last contact with his family was in 1928, and no further records have been found.
Hugh and Della Mahaffey
Jesse Hugh Mahaffey was born in 1892 in St. Francis County, Arkansas. His family moved to Idaho around 1900. In 1920, he married Hilda Howell, and they lived in Ada County, Idaho. Hilda had two daughters from a previous marriage, Mamie and Pauline. A daughter, Norma, was born in 1921. They divorced a few years later, about 1927. Hilda and her daughters moved away to Oregon, then California.
Della and Hugh married in 1929. They were together for 12 years, a large part of the Smith children's childhoods. Hugh died in 1941 (age 49).

Brad and Della Kinney
Aaron Bradford Kinney ("Brad") was born in 1901 in Montgomery County, Illinois. He married Mary Jenkins in Boise in 1923, and they had a daughter, Barbara. Mary died in 1934.
Della and Brad married in 1944; the Smith children and Barbara Kinney were all adults at this point. Brad and Della spent over 30 years together, before Della's death in 1978 (age 76). Brad died in 1988 (age 87).
