Parents' Childhood
John Sanford Smith was born in 1856 to Caleb and Mary Orr Smith in Jasper County, Iowa. In his 20s, he moved with his parents to Mitchell County, Kansas.
Ida Jane Day was born in 1866 to Abigail Day in Marshall County, Iowa. She moved with her mother and twin brother to Mitchell County, Kansas between the ages of 3 and 13.

John and Ida married in 1884. They had 10 children in the next 21 years while living in Kansas and the Pacific Northwest.

Effie, Rosa, and Jesse were born in Kansas. Rosa died as a baby.
Sometime after Jesse was born, the family moved to the eastern Washington/Oregon area. Census records say James, Jennie, and William ("Bert") were born in Oregon; Pansy and June have conflicting birthplaces (first Washington, then Idaho); Verda was born in Idaho.
In 1916-1917, both James and Jennie died as young adults.
By 1920, the family had moved to Portland, Oregon, where adult children Caleb and Bert lived with the three youngest daughters, now in their teens.
In 1924, Ida died (age 57).
John's Later Life
John died in 1935 in Marion County, Oregon (age 78).
