Parents' Childhood

Caleb was born in 1890 to John and Ida Smith in Walla Walla County, Washington.

Della was born in 1901 to Lawrence and Tillie Smitchger in Ada County, Idaho.

Caleb and Della Smith

Caleb enlisted in the Navy and served for 6 years; at the 1910 census, he was aboard the USS Nebraska (BB-14). In 1917, he registered for the World War I Draft in Benton County, Washington, listing his current profession as a farm hand. In early 1920 he was living with his parents in Portland, Oregon.

Caleb and Della met while he worked on the Smitchger family's farm. The were married in 1920 and had three children before divorcing a few years later.

James Wesley was given his father's middle name, and may also have been named after Caleb's brother, James Willes, who had died 5 years earlier.
